NME Contents Page Analysis

I noticed that one image is soupier than the rest, maybe this is done because its article, story is an exclusive that the magazine want to portray in this issue of their magazine. It attracts and catches the eye of the audience even if you want to notice it or not because it is surrounded by smaller images. The image is a picture of the band leader from Kaiser Chiefs. They are a popular band and the audience is most likely to seek them in the magazine, perhaps this is why the magazine made the image big.

From the look of the content page I intend that the target audience is for the younger generation of indie rock fans. I noticed that the images are very typical of the genre and the colours are vibrant. It makes the magazine look like there have a lot to offer. I realised that the magazine used many images because the younger audience care more about the visuals more than text.

The content page is filled with many images of musical artists; the images will defiantly keep the audience interested. Every picture has a story or small article beside it or under it so that newer audiences will know whom that particular person or group is.

The style for the contents page is good and made easy to read for the audience. Also each section that is placed on the right hand side of the magazine all text different colours. The different colours catches the audiences eye and keep them interested. Each section title is big and bold so the audience will know which particular section it is. Its made bold so that the reader wont confuse it to be part of the original text and know that its an introduction to that section.

The subscription feature on the page helps promote the magazine NME. It helps persuade the audience to subscribe to their magazine. They placed the advertisement to promote themselves and their sales. And the fact that they included 20p for the first two months catches the audiences attention.

The logo of the magazine is seen at the top left of the contents page. It is not very big and seems it was reduced in order to make room the information.

The Evolution Of Britney Spears (3)

A close up shot has been used to create sympathy for her. Her facial expressions relates to the lead story “Inside An American Tragedy”. The black and white image represents sadness, depression and all other miserable emotions, this informs the audience of her tradgedy.

The image is cropped so her face takes up the whole front cover. The audience will be instantly notice this magazine because of the main image. Usually Britney is portrayed in a sexual way, but this picture is telling the audience that she does not care for her apearence, she does not care any more.

Britney wants the audience to feel her pain and sorrow, her direct mode of address seems like she is asking each individual reader to for their time to rad about her catastrophe. The image will create sympathy and will persuade the audience to buy the magazine to read britney’s story from her point of view.

The Evolution of Britney Spears (2)

A medium long shot has been used and cropped to make the audience notice her curves, this image will attract the male audience because it shows Britney from her waist up wearing nothing but under wear. This shot creates sexual tension between her and her male audience because the image is showing Britney’s bum and the side of her breast.

There are no images in the background so the audience will only focus on her.

The fact that Britney Spears is only wearing underwear informs the audience that she is no longer America’s Teen Angel, she is now a grown woman who can do as she pleases. She sticks out her bum to make it appear bigger and presses her chest against the wall. This makes the audience notice her curves, her position makes her body look slim but toned, and this position creates sexual tension between Britney and her audience.

Bright settings are used to make the image seem like a fantasy, the settings make her look perfect and irresistible.

The colours used are pink and white. The white represents her purity and the fantasy state of mind. The pink makes Britney look more desirable because she is only wearing one piece of clothing, which happens to be pink.

Britney Spears 1

The image is a high angle shot of Britney Spears lying down on the bed. This shot makes Britney look Attractive and yet at the same time young and sexy due to the fact that she is on the phone and a teletubbie on the other arm. This shot showing Britney Spears from an appealing point of view has been used in order to attract more of the audience. She was considered America’s pop teen angel so she has a big fan base, The ‘Rolling Stones’ magazine acted upon this and made her the main image for the magazine. usually the Rolling Stones portrays celebrities with Sex appeal for the main image of the magazine, but because of Britney’s Age at the Time (17) they could not portray her as a sex symbol, but more like a cute teenager with sex appeal.

Britney Spears costume gives the audience the impression that she can be either good or bad. The fact that she is wearing a shirt whilst lying in bed could suggest that she can cover up to others, for example her parents. This image will catch the teenager boy’s eye other than men, especially because of the fact that she is a singer. Her costume does not reveal that much of her body because she is a seventeen year old girl.

The props used in this image are a telephone and a Teletubbie. The teletubbie represents that with all of her money and fame she is still an ordinary teenager. The Teddy bear also represents her childhood innocence. The telephone implies that she is constantly on the phone like a large majority of other teenage girls.

The lighting makes Britney’s body look more attractive, they increased the level of brightness on her chest area, making her chest area eye catching. This will catch the attention of teenage boys especially because of their hormones.

The intertextual reference that I noticed was the teletubbie. The Teletubbies is a children’s show aimed roughly at an audience between one to five. The fact that Britney Spears has got a Teletubbie teddy bear informs the audience that Britney is going through a stage from a girl to a woman because when you hit 18 your considered an adult.

The colours used are black, pink, purple and lilac. The colour purple represents her sexy side, especially due to the fact that the silk material is purple. This makes the image stand out. The colour pink represents her girly lifestyle. Black represents her mature side.

Planning a Music Magazine

Q1. Who is your target audience? My target audience will be aimed at teenagers because most teenagers look up to musical artist as idols.

Q2. What Style, genre or time of music is your magazine about or is going to appeal to a range of music tastes? I plan on making a music magazine of all genres. If I do a magazine of all genres I can attract more audience because my magazine will have their specific genre of music they like.

Q3. How often will your magazine come out, weekly, fortnightly, monthly or bi-monthly? I will release my magazine monthly. I chose monthly because I will need a month to gather information and interviews for the magazine. Also, since I am doing all genres of music I need a month to make sure that I have at least two images on the all genres of music.

Q4. How much will your magazine cost? My magazine will cost £3.60. I chose £3.60 because it is a reasonable price for a monthly magazine for teenagers.

Q5. Is your magazine going to be glossy like Q magazine or more like a newspaper like NME? I will make my magazine like Q magazine because Q magazine is eye catching and interesting. If I chose NME my target audience will not find it attractive.

Clash Magazine Contents Page Analysis

The central image of the contents page is the lead singer look soupier and divine. The image shows the lead singer pose by lifting his two arms out and smiling towards the sky, the lead singer posed like that because the band has made their way to the top and he is rejoicing on behalf of his whole band.

The three images are linked to the theme of the magazine because their all images of rock bands. The images let the audience know that these bands will be featured in the issue of the magazine.

All the information is placed on the bottom of the magazine. It’s been placed their so that the Foo fighters lead singer’s face and arms stands out. There are different sections such as, features, ones to watch, regulars and fashion. These sections make it easier for the readers to view and find out what page they want to view.

The background colour is blue because it matches with the lead singers top and creates symbolism. It also makes the text stand out.

The style of text is big and bold. The boldness of the text stands out and is also easier for the audience to read it. The colour of the text is white because it stands out from the colour blue.

This magazine layout is organized, neat and formal. This type of magazine is suitable for a sophisticated audience as it reflects their structured
lifestyle.

Questionnaire Results

My first question was, ‘What age group are you in?’ A majority of people I gave my questionnaire to are aged between 15 and 18.
I now know that I my target audience are teenagers because most of the people I gave my questions to are aged between 15 and 18.

My second question was ‘what genre of music do you prefer?’ and I also gave them choices out seven different genres. Out of all the seven genres, R&B was first (as you can see on the right hand side) and hip-hop and funky house. I then decided to make a magazine dedicated to these three different genres because all three of them are well known for their rhythm and base.

My third question was ‘how often should we release our magazine?’ I gave the audience a choice out of the following, weekly, monthly, every two months and other. A majority of the audience picked monthly. They answer works in my advantage because I can use that month to gather exclusive information for my audience.

My fourth question is ‘would you like this
Magazine to have multiple images on the
Front cover?’ half said yes and the other
Half said no. so I decided to change the
Layout of the cover every month or two
One month ill use one main image and
The other month ill include more images.
That way I can keep all of my audience
Pleased.

The fifth question was ‘how much will you pay for a magazine?’ almost all of my returned questionnaires circled £1-3.

My Final Question was ‘would you like a free poster that comes with the magazine?’ all of my returned questionnaires said yes. I then decided that I would include free posters in my magazine but I won’t do it often, ill include a poster once every two to three months.

Preliminary Draft (Contents Page)

The first steps I took to make my preliminary draft were to pick a background. I used the same colour scheme as my front cover. I also used the same picture as seen on my front cover. The information is all placed on the left hand side of the contents page. I did this so the audience will know what this issue will hold. In addition I placed information under the photo so the information placed under relates to the photo. I also positioned page numbers next to each text, so the audience will know what page their article or photo, etc is on. It also makes it easier for them. The title is a positioned on top of titles page, it is also Big and bold so the audience will know what page they are reading.

If I was to improve my contents page, first I would change the current picture on the contents page. I would change it because I used the same image that is on my front cover for my contents page as well. The other thing I would improve on is to add more images, I need to insert additional images to keep my audience entertained and interested. Also I need to include different font types; if I included different font types it will make my contents page more current, because it looks dull and boring. In addition I need to change the position of my title. My title looks unorganised and it makes the contents page look cluttered. The same with the text, I need to keep it all in line.

Preliminary Draft (Front Cover)

First I had to take photos of students with a digital camera, after that I transferred the photos onto the computer and saved it in my pictures. I then opened Adobe Photoshop and modified my image; I used Photoshop to erase the background. I then saved the manipulated image into a jpeg file. After I saved it I opened Adobe Illustrator and placed my image. I then inserted a background to make it look more appealing and attract the audience’s eye; I included a title and a barcode as well. When I finished that I included a star to create a puff.

If I was to improve my current front cover I will add more images to make it more attracting for the audience. I will also include more text and improve the title and the layout. I would also add the price so the audience can know how much the magazine costs.

Rolling Stones Front cover Analysis

The magazine title rolling stone focuses on the genre Rock and Pop.

The Title is big and bold so that it can stand out and catch the audience’s eye. It also helps the magazine stand out more in

They used a main image of Amy Winehouse to catch the audience’s eye and make it like Amy is staring at hat particular person. Her pose makes her look sweet and innocent, but the lead story is ‘the diva and her demons. She is actually deceiving the audience to make them think that she is a saint. She is also using a direct mode of address to bond with the audience.

One of the sell lines is ‘summer tours’, the sell line is informing the audience the time, date and location their favourite band or artist is performing. The text summer tours is in red, the red colour makes it stand out from all the other colours and may be the first thing the audience will read. Also the bright colour of red will catch the audience’s eye.
The magazine ‘Rolling Stones’ only used four colours, red, white, black and blue.

The white background symbolises her purity and relates to her current pose, her pose looks sweet and innocent but the lead story is, ‘The Diva & her Demons’. This tells the audience that looks can be deceiving and this magazine can give the audience information on her real personality.

Vibe Front Cover Analysis

Vibe Magazine is a urban music magazine founded by Quincy Jones in the 1993. Vibe enjoyed, significant success in the late 90s and early part of this decade as Hip Hop and R&B became more mainstream.

A magazine front cover is aimed to be attractive and eye catching towards the audience, persuading them to buy and read the magazine. Typical magazine front covers follow a 2/3rd image page rule, which is followed by a large heading and noticeable sell lines. The magazine Vibe follows the rule, with the front cover image taking up 2/3rd of the page, the large heading and the noticeable Sell lines.

The title Vibe is Bold and in Capitals, the colour makes it eye catching and able to notice the magazine from quite a distance.

The Main image of Vibe Is the popular R&B singer Ciara. They portrayed Ciara as a new person, new hairstyle, new dress code and a new body. Her main image reflects on the sell line. ‘New Body, No Bow Wow’. Her pose shows off her new curves, it also makes her bum look big which is often admired by the urban audience. Her seems like it could be ripped off, this will catch the audience’s eye and convince them to buy it.

The magazine is covered in two types of contrasting colours, dark blue and light blue, yellow and red, and green and white. Light blue is around Ciara’s body, which highlights her curve’s, light blue represents health, healing, tranquility, understanding, and softness. Health could be one of the factors because of her ‘New Body’. And dark blue surrounds the rest of the front cover; dark blue represents knowledge, power, integrity, and seriousness. Informing the audience that she is finished with the rapper Bow Wow and is now serious with her career. The title colour is Yellow, which is easy to spot and it also stands out from the blue background. The colours red and white also stand out.

The lighting highlights her curves and her flat stomach; this informs the audience that she has worked hard to obtain this figure. The lighting also highlights the back of her hair making it golden brown. This will catch the attention of the female audience because they may want to know how she got her hair that way.

The strap line located on top of the title is ‘Young Jeezy keeps it raw’. Its located on top of the magazine so the audience can notice it. the strap line is written in baby blue and also in capitals. The audience will be able to notice it because it is not the same blue as the background. Also the information suggest that the Rapper Young Jeezy is a rebel and refuses to keep his music les explicit, this will instantly create curiosity persuading the audience to buy it to find out what exactly the magazine meant.

The lead story is ‘New Music, New Body, No Bow Wow’ this informs the audience that Ciara Career is going to keep rising with her ne music and dance moves. Also ‘New Body’ was big and bolder than the rest of the lead story. This will make the audience persuaded to buy the magazine because more pictures of Ciara could be inside. In addition ‘No Bow Wow’ would attract the audience of all caliber because every one likes Gossip, and the fact that Ciara and Bow Wow broke up the audience will like to know what was the reasons. Bow Wow and Ciara are admired by teenagers perhaps because of the fact that their teenagers themselves. Furthermore the sell line ‘ Ciara don’t you wish your girlfriend was hot like me’ this informs the audience that she is more confident with herself. ‘Hot Like Me’ stood out because it was bigger and Yellow, informing the audience that she is a changed person. The colour Yellow represents Joy, making the audience curious, could she be joyful because she broke up with Bow Wow.
